Things to Do in the Fall in Michigan

1. Head to the Tunnel of Trees in Harbor Springs

Considered one of the most scenic ways to see Michigan fall colors, the Tunnel of Trees in Harbor Springs takes you through 20 miles of spectacular autumn views. The drive follows the M-119 from Harbor Springs all the way to Cross Village, so your full trip through the tunnel can take about an hour. However, there are several good shops along the way to grab lunch or shop. During autumn, the surrounding hardwoods that surround this scenic road erupt in a splendor of blazing colors. The end destination is an awe-inspiring overlook bluff perched above Lake Michigan.

2. Schedule an Alpena Shipwreck Cruise

An Alpena Shipwreck Cruise is one of the best things to do in Alpena no matter the time of year. You get to see some of the many shipwreck sites in Thunder Bay, which is notorious for its jagged reefs and the massive amount of debris beneath the water’s surface. However, an autumn cruise sets you out on the water at one of the most gorgeous times of year for the area. The area sites, such as the Thunder Bay Island Lighthouse, are set against a backdrop of fall-colored splendor that makes every scene look like something straight from an artist’s canvas. While you can’t tour the lighthouse openly, you will get close enough from the water to catch some amazing views.

3. Take a Hike in the Thunder Bay River State Forest

The Thunder Bay River State Forest is a favorite stopping point throughout the summer for camping, boating, and fishing. However, when the season changes, the area forest takes on a new life with all the Michigan fall colors. There are a few good trails through the forest, including the Wah-Wah-Tas-See trail which offers a nice easy hike for about a mile and a half. Another trail that’s a bit longer and more arduous is the Norway Ridge Trail, which takes you through about three miles of rolling forest terrain.

4. Visit Knaebe’s Mmmunchy Crunchy Apple Farm in Rogers City

People call Knaebe’s Mmmunchy Crunchy Apple Farm in Rogers City a hidden treasure hanging out in the middle of nowhere, and there is no better time to visit this apple farm than in the fall. You can walk through the massive orchard and pick your own apples—of which the farm grows at least seven different varieties. However, the farm also has other ways to fill your time, such as grabbing a glass of handcrafted hard cider and a slice of wood-fired pizza in the tasting room. Knaebe’s Bakery, also on-site, is known for its delicious fresh donuts and apple pies.

5. Visit the Alpena Farmer’s Market

The Alpena Farmer’s Market is a massive farmers’ market that operates outdoors through October and then indoors until spring. The market is always home to some of the best local vendors, including farmers, crafters, and even bakers and artists. However, during the fall, the market goes into full bloom with all the local harvests and the general buzz of autumn in the air. During the fall, you’ll have your pick of locally harvested fruits and vegetables, pumpkins, and fall crafts. Plus, it is not uncommon to catch an entertaining event like pumping carving contests and live musicians.
