Understanding the Benefits of THC, CBD, and Other Cannabis Components

Cannabis is a magical plant that contains hundreds of chemical compounds, some of which have powerful effects on the human body. The two most well-known compounds are THC and CBD, but there are many others that can impact how cannabis affects the body. Today, we’ll explore some of the most important chemical compounds in cannabis and how they interact with our bodies. With more research and development being put into the world of cannabis every day, we are continuously furthering our understanding of these wonderful chemicals.


Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the all star. It’s the most well-known and abundant psychoactive compound in cannabis. It’s what makes us feel happy, relaxed, and sometimes a little giggly after consuming certain strains of cannabis.

But did you know that THC actually works by mimicking the natural neurotransmitters in our brains? That’s right, THC binds to the same receptors as our brain’s own endocannabinoids, which are responsible for regulating things like mood, appetite, and pain.

But that’s not all – THC has also been found to have potential therapeutic benefits. Studies have suggested that THC may help to reduce inflammation, alleviate pain, and even slow the progression of certain cancers.

Terpenes are a class of aromatic compounds that are found in many plants, including cannabis. They are responsible for the distinctive aroma and flavor of different cannabis strains, and they also play a role in the potential therapeutic effects of the plant.

There are over 100 different terpenes found in cannabis, and each strain has a unique profile of terpenes that contributes to its overall effects. Some of the most common terpenes found in cannabis include:

  • Myrcene: This terpene has a musky, earthy aroma and is commonly found in indica strains. It is known for its potential sedative effects and may help to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Limonene: This terpene has a citrusy aroma and is commonly found in sativa strains. It is known for its potential mood-boosting effects and may help to reduce stress and anxiety.
  • Pinene: This terpene has a piney aroma and is found in many strains of cannabis. It is known for its potential anti-inflammatory and bronchodilator effects and may also help to improve memory and focus.
  • Linalool: This terpene has a floral aroma and is commonly found in indica strains. It is known for its potential sedative effects and may help to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.

Research suggests that terpenes may work together with cannabinoids, such as THC and CBD, to produce the overall effects of cannabis. This phenomenon is known as the entourage effect, and it suggests that the combination of different terpenes and cannabinoids may be more effective than individual compounds alone.

In addition to their potential therapeutic effects, terpenes also play a role in the aroma and flavor of cannabis products. Many people choose different strains of cannabis based on their preferred terpene profile, as certain terpenes can create a more uplifting, energizing effect, while others may promote relaxation and sleep.


In addition to THC and CBD, there are many other cannabinoids found in cannabis, each with its own unique effects. CBG, CBN, and CBC are lesser-known cannabinoids that are found in the cannabis plant. While THC and CBD are the most well-known cannabinoids, these other compounds also have potential therapeutic effects.

CBG, or cannabigerol, is often referred to as the “stem cell” cannabinoid because it is the precursor to many other cannabinoids, including THC and CBD. CBG may have potential anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects, and it may also help to reduce intraocular pressure, making it potentially useful for the treatment of glaucoma.

CBN, or cannabinol, is a cannabinoid that is produced when THC ages. It has potential sedative effects and may help to reduce anxiety and promote sleep. Some research also suggests that CBN may have potential antibacterial and anti-inflammatory effects.

CBC, or cannabichromene, is a cannabinoid that is found in small amounts in many cannabis strains. It may have potential anti-inflammatory effects and may also help to reduce pain and promote neurogenesis, the growth and development of nervous tissue.

While more research is needed to fully understand the potential therapeutic effects of CBG, CBN, and CBC, early studies suggest that they may have potential benefits for a variety of conditions.


Flavonoids are a class of compounds found in many plants, including cannabis. They’re responsible for the plant’s color and may also have a range of potential health benefits. For example, the flavonoid apigenin has been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety effects, while the flavonoid quercetin has been shown to have potential as an antiviral and anti-inflammatory agent.


Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCv) is a compound that’s structurally similar to THC but produces different effects. While THC is known for its appetite-stimulating effects, THCv has been shown to have appetite-suppressing effects. It’s also been shown to have potential as an anti-epileptic agent and may have neuroprotective effects.


While THC and CBD receive most of the spotlight when it comes to the effects of cannabis on the body, research is showing that many of the lesser known compounds play a larger role than originally thought. There’s still a great deal of research to do but we do know that all of these chemicals work together synergistically to create a mystical experience.
